Are there potatoes in your bag of pet food or in your pet’s diet?
Whether it is grain-free pet food you are feeding, or perhaps you are home-preparing for your pet, you may want to take the following warning into consideration: “Environmental Working Group publishes its annual rating of conventional foods with the most and least pesticide residues to fill the void left by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has largely failed to tell Americans they have a right to know about the risks of pesticide exposure and ways they can reduce pesticides in their diets.” (View Full Report)
“Alas, the conventional potato tests positive for 35 different pesticides — more pesticides by weight than any other vegetable, according to EWG’s 2014 Dirty Dozen List. Some of these pesticides remain even after peeling and washing. Pesticides found on potatoes by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Pesticide Data Program include:
- Six known or probable carcinogens
- 12 suspected hormone disruptors
- Seven neurotoxins
- Six developmental or reproductive toxins
- Nine honeybee toxins” – Only Organic
In fact, today’s average potato has more pesticides by weight than any other food tested in 2014.
In Canada – “Agricultural pesticide use has increased by a whopping 571% over the past 14 years. A Prince Edward Island potato destined for the dinner table is subjected to about 20 applications of pesticide. […] These blight pesticides are all classed by the US government as probable human carcinogens, and they account for 80%, by weight, of all pesticides sprayed on PEI. If that’s not bad enough, about 70% of the pesticides used are also considered endocrine disruptors.” – Watershed Sentinel

Farmers worldwide use more than two million tons of chemical pesticides each year.
NOT SO FUN FACT: The entire planet’s use of agricultural pesticides has gone from around 50 million kg per year in 1945 to today’s application rates of approximately 2.5 billion kg per year! And compared to back then, the pesticides are 10 times stronger (aka more toxic)!
Older folk ponder what is wrong with processed foods today. “I fed my dog or cat grocery store food back in the day and it lived to be 18!”
Guess what! Unfortunately we don’t live in those non-toxic times anymore.
Imagine that the average pet consumes potato as a staple in their diet, day in and day out, over their lifespan (as most owners are unaware of the importance of changing up the diet). Eventually, that long-term exposure is going to cause a serious problem!
Unless you are feeding organic potatoes to your family and pets, you may want to give this information some serious consideration seeing that today’s cancer and disease rates are soaring at an all-time high! It is estimated that 5% of cancer is genetic and 95% is a result of lifestyle and environmental factors. The fewer toxins we have in our systems, the fewer problems we have. Period.
